USG-Guided FNAC
Radiology
Ultrasound-guided Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure for obtaining cell samples from suspicious nodules, lumps, and masses throughout the body. Using real-time ultrasound guidance, a thin (22-25 gauge) needle is precisely directed into the target lesion for accurate cell sampling. This technique is commonly performed for thyroid nodules (TIRADS 3 and above), breast lumps, enlarged lymph nodes (cervical, axillary, inguinal), salivary gland masses, and other superficial and deep-seated lesions. The real-time imaging guidance ensures the needle tip is accurately positioned within the lesion, maximizing diagnostic yield and minimizing false negative results. The procedure is quick (typically 10-15 minutes), performed under local anesthesia with minimal discomfort, and patients can resume normal activities almost immediately. Samples are sent for cytopathological examination, and reports are typically available within 2-3 days. FNAC is often the first-line investigation before deciding on surgical intervention.
