USG-Guided Aspiration / Drainage
Radiology

Ultrasound-guided aspiration and drainage is a therapeutic procedure for safely removing fluid collections from the body using real-time imaging guidance. This minimally invasive approach is used for draining abscesses (liver, renal, pelvic, subphrenic, and soft tissue), aspirating cysts (hepatic, renal, ovarian), thoracentesis (pleural effusion drainage), paracentesis (ascitic fluid drainage), and joint effusion aspiration. The real-time ultrasound visualization ensures safe needle or catheter placement, avoiding blood vessels, bowel loops, and other vital structures. For large collections, a pigtail catheter may be placed for continuous drainage. All procedures are performed under strict aseptic conditions with local anesthesia. The aspirated fluid can be sent for biochemical analysis, culture sensitivity, and cytology as clinically indicated. This approach offers significant advantages over surgical drainage including faster recovery, lower complication rates, and the ability to perform the procedure at the bedside or in the ultrasound suite without general anesthesia.
