Holter Monitoring
Cardiology

24-hour ambulatory ECG monitoring using a portable Holter device for continuous recording of the heart's electrical activity during normal daily activities and sleep. A Holter monitor is a small, battery-powered device connected to 3-5 electrodes on the chest that records every heartbeat for a full 24-hour period (extended 48-72 hour monitoring available when needed). This test is invaluable for detecting intermittent arrhythmias that may not occur during a standard ECG — including paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ventricular ectopics, and heart blocks. It is commonly ordered for patients with palpitations, unexplained dizziness, syncope (fainting episodes), and to evaluate the effectiveness of anti-arrhythmic medications. The patient maintains a diary of activities, symptoms, and sleep times which is correlated with the ECG recording. During the monitoring period, patients should continue all normal activities except bathing or swimming. After 24 hours, the device is returned and the recording is analyzed using specialized software. A comprehensive report documenting heart rate trends, arrhythmia episodes, and symptom correlation is provided within 2-3 days.
