Color Doppler Echocardiography

Color Doppler Echocardiography combines standard 2D Echo with color flow mapping technology to provide comprehensive visualization of blood flow within the heart. This advanced technique assigns colors to blood flow — typically red for flow towards the transducer and blue for flow away — allowing immediate visual identification of normal and abnormal flow patterns. It is essential for detecting and quantifying valvular regurgitation (leaking heart valves — mitral regurgitation, aortic regurgitation, tricuspid regurgitation), valvular stenosis (narrowed valves — mitral stenosis, aortic stenosis), intracardiac shunts (ASD, VSD — holes in the heart), prosthetic valve function assessment, and abnormal intracardiac flow patterns. Continuous wave (CW) and Pulsed wave (PW) Doppler provide precise velocity and pressure gradient measurements essential for quantifying the severity of valve disease and guiding surgical decision-making. The examination is non-invasive, painless, and takes approximately 30-40 minutes. No preparation is required.
